Keefer Rooms
Acrylic on canvas, 36x48 inches
Depicting the four-storey Single Room Occupancy (SRO) building built on Keefer Street in Vancouver's Chinatown in 1912. Gain Wah, a traditional Cantonese-style noodle cafe has been operating on the main floor from 1981 until a fire & explosion on Sept. 9, 2022 closed it & displaced the building's 39 residents.
The Province bought the building in 2023 B.C.'s Ministry of Housing, with plans to renovating & reopen it at some point in 2025.
I noticed a fresh "New New Gain Wah" sign the other day, so maybe the restaurant will reopen again?
