The Vancouver Special is a unique architectural style of residential house developed in Vancouver between the 1965 and 1985. They are found nowhere else. Although the Vancouver Special had a negative reputation because of their boxy design, they were a practical, versatile and economical housing solution. The Special maximizes the square footage of a home on narrow lots at a low cost.
Mark Mizgala photographed a series of Specials then invited local artists to rework his prints. The talented participants responded with paintings, drawings, prints, collages and photographs. With the Vancouver Special as the catalyst, 27 visual artists graciously volunteered their time, energy and imagination.
